The Basic Proteins of Cobra Venom
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cobra venoms contain heat stable, basic, proteins that inhibit iodide accumulation by thyroid slices. Activity is not related to the content of phospholipase A or various other enzymatic activities. These proteins are present only in Elapid venoms and not in snakes of the Crotalidae or Viperidae families. Two such basic proteins, named cobramines A and B, have been purified from the crude venom of the Indian cobra (Naja naja) by carboxymethyl cellulose chromatography, gel filtration, and ammonium sulfate crystallization. Together they constitute -40% of the venom protein. Their isoelectric points are N11.9 and -12.6, respectively. Cobramine B was found to be homogeneous in paper and disc gel electrophoresis and by ultracentrifugation (s~~,~ = 0.98). The molecular weight was 6400 from equilibrium centrifugation measurements and 5840 on the basis of amino acid analysis (52 residues).

Production of effective antivenin to treat cobra snake
Conventional treatment of Naja naja oxiana (NNO) envenoming requires large volumes of equine antivenin raised against NNO crude venom. The poor efficiency of this antivenin is assumed to be due to the high molecular weight non-toxic proteins, a strong immunogen, present in the crude venom. These proteins cause depression of antibody formation against the low molecular weight toxic components of...

Crotoxin, the first crystalline protein from snake venom isolated by Slotta and Fraenkel-Conrat (1) in 1938 from the venom of Crotalus terr$cus terr$icus, carried both neurotoxic and hemolytic activities. However, it was found later that there were at least two markedly different proteins in this crystalline preparation (2). In 1944, De (3) isolated crystalline hemolysin from the venom of Naja ...
متن کاملCHARACTERIZATION OF AN ANTICOAGULANT AGENT IN THE VENOM OF IRANIAN COBRA (NAJA NAJA OXIANA).
Snake venoms contain a rich variety of factors which affect blood coagulation. There have been few reports on the anticoagulant activity of the venom of different cobras, but no such observations have been made on the Iranian cobra, although a procoagulant factor has been described. In this study an anticoagulant factor has been purified from the venom of Naja naja oxiana using gel filtrat...
متن کاملThe clinical significance of venom detection in patients of cobra snakebite.
Cobra snakebites are one of the most frequent occurrences among the poisonous snakebites. The correlation between the serum concentrations of cobra venom in the victims with the severity of systemic and local symptoms after envenoming is still awaited for investigation. In this paper, we have developed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect Taiwan cobra venom existed in the seru...
